FIFA reports that $1.57 billion in transfers were made in January 2023, setting a record.

FIFA has confirmed that during the January transfer window, football clubs spent a record $1.57 billion (£1.27 billion) on new players.

The world’s governing body of football said on Thursday that there were a record-breaking number of international contracts signed last month.

In the women’s game, there were 341 transfers that crossed international borders, which is a 30.2% increase from January 2022 and a new record. The recent window saw spending of $774,300 (£637,914) overall, setting a new high.

Men’s football had 4,387 international transfers completed in January, the most since the Transfer Matching System was introduced in 2010, according to FIFA’s International Transfer Snapshot for January 2023.

Transfer fees cost $1.57 billion, or roughly $230 million (£189 million).
