Many computer users worldwide suffer from back pain. When you have your back to the wall, it usually signifies you’re in danger. However, having your back against a wall will help your health in some yoga positions.

Swami Gitananda defines body geometry as “triangles, straight lines, circles, and parallel lines” in Hatha Yoga. When doing a position, stretch your body to its maximum extent and then hold it there for a slow count of 10, progressively increasing the time until each posture can be maintained for 30 seconds. Holding a posture is important in yoga because it allows the body to settle into the stretch and relax. Then, each time you stretch, you’ll go just a little bit further.

Many of Hatha Yoga’s sideways, or lateral, stretches require the body to face forward, with hips level and back and spine tilted neither forward nor back. Leaning forward to increase the stretch is common among beginners. However, leaning forward is incorrect and may even be harmful. Make sure to maintain your spine firmly against a wall while performing these stretches. The wall is really a prop.

Even people who have previously practiced yoga may discover that they are unable to bend as much as they believed they could when the postures are performed correctly. The extra time spent developing careful postures will pay off in the form of increased flexibility and strength in your body.
