A wedding proposal almost turned tragic when a Kenyan woman swallowed an engagement ring that had been hidden in her food as a surprise.
According to The Nation Kenya, Ms Jessica Hawayu and her family gathered for a family party on Sunday March 12 at her home in Gongoni, Tana River County.
Her family and her lover Johannah Charo had secretly prepared a surprise engagement party for her.
The day began nicely, with family members cooking meals, and Jessica was tasked with preparing a special dish that was a favorite of her father’s.
“Pilau is both our father’s and her boyfriend’s favorite. “She knew she was doing it for Dad, so she dedicated herself to it,” her sister, Melanie Hawayu, said.
Meanwhile, the boyfriend and his buddies hung out in town, waiting for the signal from his girlfriend’s family that everything was ready.
They received a text at 2pm instructing them to begin progressing toward the venue as the tables were being arranged.
The woman’s mother and boyfriend devised a plan to bury the engagement ring in a dish of pilau, where she would locate it.
“Dad had objected to the concept, but because there were no other options, we decided to take a chance with the one we had and go ahead with it,” Melanie explained.
Jessica’s mother was in charge of serving the dinner and was constantly sending her daughter on errands while burying the ring in the plate.
Charo had already infiltrated the premises and was about to appear from behind the girlfriend’s seat.
The table was filled with laughter and excitement as Charo tiptoed towards it, a move cut short when his partner began coughing on the food.
All efforts were made to save her as she exited the table and hurried towards her father, who only hit her on the back three times.
