Tinubu Steps In: EFCC Ordered to Unfreeze Osun Accounts

President moves to calm political tension days before Osun election

OSOGBO — President Bola Tinubu has ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to return to court and seek the immediate vacation of the order freezing Osun State Government accounts.

The EFCC had obtained a court order on August 5, 2026, amid an investigation into alleged suspicious financial transactions involving state funds. The development triggered strong reactions in Osun, particularly with the governorship election only days away.

Tinubu said the timing of the EFCC action was inappropriate and could create the impression that a federal agency was being used to influence the election.

The President also personally informed Governor Ademola Adeleke of his decision during a telephone conversation, according to presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga.

The EFCC, however, maintained that its action was based on its mandate to protect public funds, saying it had identified large transfers from the affected accounts.

With Osun voters set to go to the polls on August 15, the President’s intervention has now become a major development in the final days of the election campaign.
