Epixode defends Abiana over ‘Mentor’ judge backlash

Ghanaian reggae/dancehall artist Epixode has spoken out about the recent backlash Abiana has received from the public after she made a comment about a contestant at a music show audition.

After that happened, singer and songwriter Abiana took over the timelines of social media users. As a judge on the reality show, Abiana is seen in a video telling one of the contestants to leave the room after a “abysmal” performance.

The video shows Abiana and Epixode in the judges’ seats. In the meantime, Epixode talked about the situation in an interview with Hitz FM that ghanaweekend.com saw.

He told Doreen Avio on Daybreak Hitz that the judges didn’t have enough time to coach or correct over 500 contestants. He even said that people like Simon Cowell, who is a popular judge on “American Idol” and “Britain’s Got Talent,” are loved by people even though he is hard on contestants.

“I think it’s one of those things where you just look and move on. People also didn’t think about the fact that we had to sit down all day, left the building around noon, and then had to choose 35 people out of over 500 who came to the audition. So you can’t be soft on some of them,” he told the hostess Doreen Avio.

The Atia singer, on the other hand, said that he would have liked it if TV3 and the organizers of “Mentor” had posted videos of other parts of the audition where they said nice things about other contestants.

“It would have been nice if the media house had also posted a sweet side of it, so that they could balance things out instead of focusing on that side. But then again, I think they know what will get people to pay attention to it,” Epixode said.

He also said that there was a time when he promised to help an old man in his 60s who also came to the audition, but the TV station did not report that.

“But then again, it is an audition. We all don’t like Simon Cowell on American Idol, but we all love him. So for me, the sad part is that I think Abiana hasn’t seen that tough side before. It’s something new to her, so it hit her very hard, but some of us have been through it, and it’s okay, we’re not giving up. We’ll just do it,” he continued.
