If you’re trying to lose weight, you’re probably looking for a 3 day diet menu. Three-day diets have been popular for decades, even before the internet. If you’re old enough, you may recall your friends and family passing around photocopies of the various three-day diet menu options. Nowadays, most of us receive them via email.

There are several popular three-day diets, such as the Mayo Clinic Diet, the Cleveland Clinic Diet, and the Tuna and Water Diet. Each of these has a different three-day diet menu, but they all work in the same way.

Most of these diets use a combination of low calories and low carbohydrates to produce extremely rapid weight loss, usually around two pounds per day.

In general, they are said to have originated at a medical clinic to help heart patients lose weight before surgery. Most clinics have come out and denied being the creators of these programs, but they remain popular because they work.

The Mayo Clinic Diet, also known as the Grapefruit Diet, is probably the most well-known of these diets. This differs from the others in that, predictably, grapefruit is heavily featured in the three-day diet menu.

The grapefruit, according to legend, contains enzymes that aid in fat loss. While there is some evidence to support this, the real benefit of grapefruit is that eating it before a meal forces you to eat less at that meal.

Grapefruits are high in water and bulk, but low in calories, so they take up a lot of space in your stomach when you eat them. As a result, you’ll eat fewer other, more calorie-dense foods, resulting in fewer calories total at each meal without feeling deprived.

Aside from the grapefruit diet, the way the 3 day diet menu varies is due to the amount of carbohydrates allowed. Some diets recommend a piece of toast or bread with each meal, while others forbid starches entirely.

Breakfast on these programs typically consists of one of two options. Toast and peanut butter on the higher carb programs. On the lower carb diets, it’s usually two eggs and some bacon.

Lunch is similar in this regard. The high carb versions will allow you to have meat, bread or toast, and possibly some fruit. Low carb diets will only allow you to eat meat and a salad with full fat dressing.

Dinner is usually the same for both of them. You’ll usually be eating meat and vegetables in fairly large portions, with dinner being the largest meal of the day.

To compensate for the extra carbohydrates, the higher carb versions tend to be lower in calories. A lower carb 3 day diet menu will usually be less calorie restrictive, so the key is to choose diets that you can mostly easily stick to.
